I was lying in bed this morning trying to remember what I did last New Years Eve… it took me a while, which frustrated me, but eventually I remembered that we were in Australia playing shows. After I got up I found this photo Julian took; it was probably taken 30 minutes or so before midnight. It’s crazy to see myself, staring into the camera, before all the crazy/amazing things 2011 brought us. It brought us to some of the most amazing places we’ve been as a band - Australia, Japan, Coachella…but it’s really been a year of shifting mindsets and outlooks. All year we’ve been working on a record that has pushed us outside of our comfort zone and into a new, exciting world. A sort of elated, ethereal dreamland, really. It began on the sunny beaches of Australia, went to Portland, Los Angeles, Japan, and will continue through the New York winter. There’s so much love on this record, so much vitality, some anxiety, a bit of heartbreak…we can’t wait to get it out. But you gotta tame the beast before you let it out of its cage. That’s from Zoolander.
It’s a silly picture, but to me I see a one year ago me warning 2011 me not to fuck it up. I think he (I) would have been proud.
Anyways… thanks everybody, we owe it all to you. 2012 is going to be great.

My 2011 started out pretty well. Pretty darn good, I shall say. However, towards the end of the year, it just went downhill. All the way down. And I thought I wouldn’t be able to stand back up, but I was wrong. Your upbeat-mellow songs had been accompanying through the nights. Excuses, for instance, gave me a sense a hope that someone out there is waiting for me, Sleeping In lulled me to sleep each night, All Day Day Light made me feel like a million bucks (odd, though), etc etc. So, I’d like to say thank you, I’m glad I’ve found your music in 2011 and hope to see you out here in Malaysia soon.
